"How do we believe that through the lens, the image displayed on the screen is real and convincing? Do we believe it because the image on the screen is the reflection of our own emotion?"

Video call practice tries to apply director Coppola's Live Cinema concept and method to further explore more possibilities of how Live Cinema could be achieved.

The play begins with an oversea video call.

Lin Zi-Heng, Wu I-Ting, Chiu Chui-Lung met during the making of Chiu's directorial film The Brighter Day in 2013. Later in 2018, the three participated Close to You Festival with their theatre play 年越し蕎麦, which portraits the ambiguous scene of romance and reality in a Japanese bar in Linsen area. Their latest production Video call practice explores the reality and confusion intertwined by cinema, theatre and images.

Pinch the shape of the head, add the contour of brow bone. The corner of my mouth raises as I am making a smile on the puppet's face. After a big hard laugh, I often either think this is all fake or she is smiling at me.

Alexander Calder created the theatre piece Circus in 1926 about his experiment and game. He found the relationship between a solo performer and objects through the iron wire toy and the moving mechanism. This program adopts the idea from Calder’s “one-person circus” as its performing form. The audience will be guided to complete an improvised show in a tiny circus with the iron wire objects they make. The theme is about the ongoing war started by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

  • Frankenstein's cardboard box

    ►Raintree Chan
    ►Installation & Participatory     ►non verbal

This work was inspired by pop art artist Richard Hamilton’s Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?. I turned the appealing part into a hyperreality while keeping the visuals of pop culture and consumerism, and created Frankenstein out of the desires. The characters were brought to life by the images of used cardboard boxes and magazines collected from daily life. They are close to the story about distance that you have pictured in your wild imagination.

    Raintree Chan
My favorite character Frankenstein, consists of a combination of various objects made, inspires me to start my work in collage art. I am always obsessed in the category in A-Z and the absurdity of B Cult films, same as my creation, reminds of me how fascinating it is within myself.

Installation

  • Flesh

    ►Cheng Chia-Yin, Liang Mong-Han
    ►Installation

Flesh was debuted at the 1st Close to You Festival in 2010. A puppet with its muscles cut off was hung from a pulley on the iron stand. The puppeteer in laboratory suit animates the puppet, frigidly, by weighing raw meat. The audience was watching all these as if it was an experiment leading to a destined outcome. At the end, the puppeteer grilled the meat and shared it with the audience - making the audience a complicity.

    Cheng Chia-Yin
Devoted in puppet theatre for more than 30 years, Cheng is well known for using objects and space to create a sense of fluidity that adds poetic quality into her works. As the Artistic Director of the Puppet & Its Double Theatre, Cheng has been engaging in cultivating puppet artists and international projects. With the unique aesthetics across various cultural backgrounds and art fields, she has successfully led the trend of using puppet as one of the main media in theatre scene
